A routine police chase in San Bernardino, California, turned into a devastating tragedy when Deputy Hector Cuevas, Jr. lost his life after crashing his patrol car. The accident occurred on Monday morning, shortly before 11 a.m., when officers spotted a suspected stolen vehicle.
Police Chase Ends in Deadly Crash

According to officials, Victorville City Station deputies attempted to pull over suspect Ryan Turner, but he refused to stop, leading to a high-speed chase.
While pursuing the suspect, Cuevas’ patrol car crashed into another vehicle before violently slamming into a light pole. The impact was so severe that the car split in half, leaving the deputy with fatal injuries.
Authorities confirmed that Cuevas died at the scene, while the driver of the other car was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Suspect Tries to Escape on Foot but Gets Caught
Despite the crash, the 22-year-old suspect, Ryan Dwayne Turner Jr., continued to flee before abandoning his vehicle and running on foot. However, law enforcement officers quickly caught up and arrested him at El Evado Road and Zuni Lane.
Turner now faces serious charges, including vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and evading a peace officer causing death or serious injury.
Honoring Deputy Cuevas’ Service

Deputy Cuevas had been with law enforcement for six years, serving at the Victorville station for the last three. His colleagues and officials described him as a dedicated officer, a loving father, and a true protector.
“We are devastated by this loss,” San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said in a statement. “Hector was everything a great officer should be, and his bravery will always be remembered.”
Following the tragic accident, multiple law enforcement agencies escorted Cuevas’ body in a solemn procession to the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office, honoring his service and sacrifice.

Authorities are still investigating the exact circumstances that led to the deadly crash. While details remain unclear, officials emphasized that this tragic incident highlights the dangers officers face while protecting their communities.
“Our hearts go out to the deputy’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time,” the San Bernardino Police Officers Association said in a public statement. “His sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
