The district is expanding its free lunch program to run on Saturdays, beginning today and through spring break. As usual, the program is open to anyone under 18, with no ID required. According to Principal Cheryl Lawton, more than 200 meals a day have been served.

Branham and other schools in the county will be closed for the rest of the school year and continuing with Phase 2 of distance learning, which will include more structured learning and grades, the district announced this evening. In an interview with the Bear Witness today, Principal Cheryl Lawton acknowledged the extraordinary circumstances of the closure have put a strain on many families, and that resources are available. The school is serving more than 200 lunches a day for students and their families. Armed with a small team equipped with 3D printers,

Armed with a small team equipped with 3D printers, donations from friends and supplies, Bay Area neuroscientist Santani Teng has recruited a grassroots group to make and deliver homemade face shields for health care workers on the front line of the coronavirus pandemic. It’s a personal and social cause for him, as hospitals are facing a severe shortage of personal protective equipment and his physician friends are reusing their personal protective equipment, some to the point of disintegration. “I don’t want them to be overwhelmed,” he said. “I don’t want them to get sick.” To read the full story and to help with Teng’s cause, click on the links in our bio.

Nurse practitioner Camelot Thompson works with the homeless and uninsured populations with the San Mateo County Mobile Health Clinic, groups that are especially vulnerable during the Coronavirus outbreak. Her advice echoes that of many health care workers: Socially distance yourself and thoroughly wash your hands. Additionally, she tells teens to do a better job of sheltering-in-place, as they are more likely to carry the disease without showing any symptoms. In the end, her message is one of hope: that this is a virus like other viruses, and that normal hygiene practices can go a long way toward slowing the spread of COVID-19. Online education will continue through May 1, with teachers and staff preparing for what they call phase 2 of instruction. The new phase will likely be more structured than the supplementary education students are currently receiving, and according to Principal Cheryl Lawton will be finalized in the next two weeks. Santa Clara joins six other counties in the Bay Area mandating school closures to slow the spread of COVID-19, which has so far killed 17 in the county, with 459 confirmed cases as of Wednesday. Bruin 2 Bruin volunteer tutors are making themselves available through teleconferencing apps such as Google Meet and Zoom during the school shutdown. The free service offers students a chance to get one-on-one help from their peers. “It’s important to offer tutoring help, especially because of the school closure,” said junior Chantal Wang. Seniors Cassidy Chang and Julianne Alvares have a lot to say about the rapidly evolving coronavirus pandemic in the first episode of their podcast, titled “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” The pair of friends, two avid news readers, share their opinions about their current self-isolation from their potentially squandered graduation plans (“We waited 12 years for this”) to the constant barrage COVID-19 news (“people like to shoot the messenger”.) Alvares, who is the Bear Witness co-editor, said that she’d always wanted to do a podcast from a Gen Z-er’s perspective, which she said is not always considered. The College Board announced today that its AP exam

The College Board announced today that its AP exams will be taken at home, and will consist of 45-minute free response questions, a dramatic shift made in response to the wide-reaching effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The College Board said that tests can be taken by smartphone, tablet, laptop and even written by hand and submitted via a photograph, and students will only be tested on content learned through the beginning of March. Security measures, though unspecified, include plagiarism detectors and other digital sign-in processes.
