Mission Working Dogs: A Hero’s Path to Healing Through Service Dogs

Mission Working Dogs A Hero’s Path to Healing Through Service Dogs

Yesterday, my friend Matt and I took a life-changing trip to Oxford, Maine, where we had the honor of meeting Christy Gardner, the inspiring founder of Mission Working Dogs (MWD). This nonprofit organization trains service and therapy dogs that help those in need, including first responders, veterans, and others facing mental and physical challenges. Located on a peaceful 12-acre property, MWD is a beacon of hope for many.

Upon arriving at MWD, it felt like we entered a new world—a place where healing takes place through the bond between humans and working dogs. Christy’s mission is powerful and impactful, and after spending time with her and the dogs, it was clear that her work is transforming lives.

Who is Christy Gardner?

When we first met Christy, we could instantly tell she was a true hero—someone who had faced unimaginable challenges and emerged stronger. Christy is not just any veteran; she’s a double amputee who has served in the U.S. Army. Her journey began when, during her sophomore year at Long Island University, she witnessed the tragic events of 9/11. This tragedy motivated her to join the military and serve her country.

Christy’s story, however, is not just one of courage in the face of battle—it’s about survival and resilience. While overseas, Christy sustained severe injuries that changed her life forever. Although she cannot share the exact details of her injuries, she bravely opened up about the physical toll it took on her body. Her injuries included skull fractures, a traumatic brain injury, abdominal surgeries, and an incomplete spinal cord injury. As a result, Christy lost both of her legs.

Despite these challenges, Christy didn’t give up. Instead, she relied on her service dog Moxie, which played a crucial role in helping her rebuild her life and confidence. Today, a statue of Moxie stands proudly outside the MWD facility, symbolizing the profound bond between Christy and her service dog.

Not only has Christy rebuilt her life, but she’s also represented Team USA in sled hockey and competed in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, showing the world what true strength and determination look like.

What Happens at Mission Working Dogs?

The moment we arrived at MWD, we were greeted by the joyful presence of several golden retrievers, including Luna, Doug, Liberty Bell, Tator, and a few playful puppies. These dogs, trained with love and care, provide life-changing support to those in need. At MWD, dogs are carefully paired with individuals to help them regain independence, navigate daily tasks, and heal emotionally.

For example, these service dogs assist people with PTSD by helping them feel safe in public spaces, from attending movies to shopping. They even support individuals with routine tasks like doing laundry. It was incredible to witness how the dogs, with their boundless love and loyalty, can make such a difference in the lives of those who need it the most.

One of the most remarkable aspects of MWD’s approach is the two-week training program for individuals who are paired with a service dog. During this time, participants stay in comfortable homes on the property, where they undergo intensive training to build a deep connection with their dogs.

Christy also shared an eye-opening moment that left me speechless: she introduced us to special medical boots. These boots simulate the experience of walking without legs, offering insight into the challenges faced by individuals like Christy. This innovative approach allows people to better understand the emotional and physical connection between the dogs and those they help.

Meet the Team Behind the Mission

Christy’s dedication to her mission has inspired many others, including Lauren King, a former elementary school teacher who now works as MWD’s Client and Services Coordinator. Lauren shared how she left her teaching job to join Christy in this life-changing work. She finds daily inspiration in the mission and says she’s never been happier in her life.

Christy Gardner is more than just a hero. She’s a patriot, someone who not only served her country but also continues to serve her community. The work she and her team do at MWD is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the healing power of animals.

As we left the property, Matt and I couldn’t stop talking about the incredible work being done at MWD. Christy Gardner’s story and the lives she’s touched serve as a reminder of the profound impact one person can have on the world.

We encourage you to check out Mission Working Dogs on Facebook and consider supporting their important work. Christy Gardner and her team truly deserve a round of applause for the incredible difference they are making in people’s lives.
