Nigerian Man Extradited to the U.S. for Alleged Sextortion Scheme Linked to Teen’s Suicide

A 24-year-old man from Nigeria has been extradited to the U.S. to face multiple charges after allegedly running a sextortion scheme that led to the suicide of a South Carolina teenager. The charges include child exploitation, cyberstalking, and coercion of a minor, among others.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolina announced that Hassanbunhussein Abolore Lawal from Osun State, Nigeria, was indicted in connection to the death of Gavin Guffey, a 17-year-old from Rock Hill, South Carolina. Gavin tragically died by suicide in July 2022, after falling victim to Lawal’s online manipulation.

The Sextortion Scheme

Lawal allegedly posed as a young woman on social media, convincing Gavin to send compromising photos. After the teenager complied, Lawal reportedly threatened to release the photos unless Gavin paid money. This harassment is believed to have intensified, leading to the tragic outcome.

In addition to targeting Gavin, Lawal is accused of continuing his harassment, extending threats to Gavin’s family members after his death. According to authorities, Lawal’s actions were part of a broader scheme that included coercing other victims in a similar manner.

U.S. Attorney Adair Ford Boroughs emphasized that this case highlights the dangers of online predators, stating, “We will not allow predators who target our children to hide behind a keyboard or across the ocean.”

Gavin’s Story: A Life Cut Short

Gavin Guffey’s father, Rep. Brandon Guffey, a South Carolina state lawmaker, shared details of the events leading up to his son’s tragic death. Gavin had been conversing with Lawal on Instagram, where the alleged perpetrator convinced him to enable Instagram’s “vanish mode.” This feature allows messages to disappear after being read, making it easier for predators to manipulate young users.

After Gavin sent compromising photos, the scammer demanded money. Although Gavin initially claimed he had only $25, the scammer insisted on more, even threatening him with a gun. Desperate and overwhelmed, Gavin took his own life that evening.

Rep. Guffey explained the emotional toll, stating, “I don’t know if any of the pictures were shared, but I do know my son was devastated.”

The Aftermath: Harassment Continues

After Gavin’s death, Lawal is accused of tracking down and threatening Gavin’s father and cousin, continuing the cycle of extortion. These harassing messages, coupled with the tragedy of Gavin’s suicide, have intensified the need for justice.

FBI Special Agent Steve Jensen spoke on the investigation, saying, “The defendant’s alleged actions are reprehensible, resulting in the tragic loss of a young man’s life.” He assured that law enforcement would continue working to hold criminals accountable, no matter where they operate.

The Charges and Legal Proceedings

Lawal faces serious charges, including child exploitation resulting in death, production and distribution of child sexual abuse material, coercion, enticement of a minor, and interstate threats with intent to extort. If convicted, Lawal faces life in prison, with a mandatory 30-year sentence for child exploitation resulting in death.

Additionally, Lawal could be ordered to pay restitution to the Guffey family for the losses incurred from his alleged actions.

The Ongoing Fight Against Sextortion

This case shines a light on the dangers of sextortion, a growing problem where perpetrators exploit vulnerable individuals for financial gain. Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and U.S. Attorneys’ offices, are committed to bringing perpetrators like Lawal to justice, showing that such crimes, regardless of where they originate, will not be tolerated.

Rep. Guffey has made it his mission to raise awareness about sextortion and encourage stronger online safety practices. The tragedy of his son’s death has highlighted the urgent need for education and preventive measures to protect young people from similar experiences.
