The recent match between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Robert Guerrero was one which, while respectable from a technical standpoint, and serving to continue Mayweather’s undefeated streak, will not be regarded as one of the greatest fights in history, or even one of the best fights of the year.
I seriously liked the fact that when the two were face-to-face in the ring, they were mad and serious, and am not particularly troubled by the fact that the match did not end in a knockout. It seemed like a close fight, but Mayweather ultimately got the best of his opponent, ultimately winning by decision. He was able to throw more punches on Guerrero, despite hurting his right hand relatively early in the contest. Surprisingly, Guerrero was able to withstand these blows, including some particularly ferocious punches to the face. One punch, which cut Gurrero above the eye, looked to be a match-ending injury due to the severity of the bleeding, but Gurrero was able to overcome this injury, and remained standing even after the final round came to a close.
With this being said, Why I didn’t really like was that Mayweather spent more time avoiding Gurrero and bouncing around the ring than he did actually fighting, which resulted in a boxing match which was entirely devoid of any real excitement for long stretches of its duration. Equally culpable in this regard is, Guerrero, who certainly didn’t earn any points from officials by hugging and grabbing Mayweather repeatedly over the course of the contest. Overall, it felt like the whole boxing match was far too uneventful, as not a sinlge standout moment may be found in any of the 3-minute intervals of each round of the 12 round fight.
While I can appreciate that Mayweather remains undefeated, having won by unanimous decision, I hate that he won’t consider fighting Saul Alvarez or even Manny Pacquaio for his next fight of the year. This being said, I just can’t wait to see who his new opponent will be for September scheduled match.
