On this in 1980, 13 year old Cari Lightner was struck by a vehicle and killed. The drunk driver that killed Cari Lightner, had previous incidents involving drinking and driving. In fact he had just received a ticket for being intoxicated a week prier to this incident.

Due this incident, Cari’s mother, Candy Lightner was compelled to found “Mother Against Drunk Driving,” also know as  MADD. The organization would grow into one of the country’s biggest non-profits.
